Baby Wetsuit
A baby wetsuit will protect the child but only if it is taken care of correctly. The following are the basic steps needed to take care of these garments.
Required Materials
Large plastic bag
Beeswax
Neoprene patches
Wetsuit cement
Plastic hanger
Baby shampoo
Conditioner
Baking soda
Warm water
Step 1
Begin by soaking the garment in clean fresh water. You can dip the garment in the tub or a large container. To get rid of the dirt, rinse the garment repeatedly. Replace the water when it gets dirty. If the garment is still dirty, proceed to the next step.
Step 2
For the final rinse, apply conditioner for the garment. You can buy this in scuba shops or in specialty stores on the Net. This is useful not just for cleaning the baby wetsuit, but also getting rid of odors and smells. If you can’t find this conditioner, combine baking soda with a few drops of baby shampoo. This will keep the suit smelling nice.
Step 3
The next step is to examine the suit for neoprene cracks or holes. If there are cracks, take due note of their location so you can fix it when the garment has dried. Do not attempt to fix the cracks if the garment is still wet.
Step 4
After rinsing, hang the suit on a hanger and let it air dry. Make sure the hanger you use is strong enough for the garment. You can buy these special hangers online; they are much stronger than the typical hangers sold in stores.
Step 5
There is special cement available for patching up these small garment cracks. The bigger holes will need neoprene patches. Follow the instructions on how to apply these on the garment.
Step 6
For the zippers you can use beeswax or a similar lubricant. This will prevent them from ripping up the suit.
Step 7
When the baby is not using it, store the garment away from excessive heat, cold, dust or smog. You can put a trash bag or another container over it so it does not get damaged.
Tips and Warnings
Do not use fabric softener on the garment unless it is stated safe to do so. Never apply petroleum jelly on a neoprene garment.
The baby wetsuit caring tips given here should work with most types. But it is important that you read any included instructions on the package. This is to ensure the garment is cared for in the proper manner.
